Born
near Washington DC, 1950.
Educated
in Catholic Schools in the Washington area and I
lived in Kamakuri, Japan during the 1950’s.
My family returned and I attended St.
Mary’s in Alexandria and Bishop Ireton H.S. until
1968 when I graduated.
I went directly through two years of college
at Wheeling College until I left in 1969 to attend
the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the fall of 1970.
I worked and developed my abilities as an
artist. We
worked for three hours in the morning and three
hours in the afternoon on our art everyday we were
at school at the Academy, until we earned our way
into our own studio.
Graduated
from PAFA in 1974 with a certificate, I won a
fellowship to return for one more year to that
school. I
worked on my painting and graphic arts of etching
back then, and lived in West Philadelphia.
I won many prizes at the Academy.
I
have shown my artwork in The Walnut’s Gallery, the
Painted Bride Gallery and other small galleries in
Philadelphia. It
was very competitive their and my artwork didn’t
catch on. So,
I moved down here in 1978 to a little farm in Nelson
County where I lived with friends who put me up for
a year. I
found some peace in Schuyler that year. But, I
stopped painting then, and didn’t pick it up for
another few years.
I have shown in many restaurants in this
city, including, Megabow’s, The Virginian, Little
John’s Deli, The Rising Sun Bakery, and
Spencer’s 206.
I
am now working as a teacher’s assistant for
Albemarle High School, but I try to keep active in
the art around in this community by doing some
weekend art, and showing in places like Spencer’s
206 a CD album store on Water St.
I have been involved with the Blue Ridge
Clubhouse since it began in the 1977 era and I am
now a board member of both the Very Special Arts
Committee and the Region Ten Community Service
Board. I
am an active bike rider, but I do drive as well.
I am having a one man show this April of
paintings.
I
also went to Mary Baldwin College and graduated with
distinction in May of 1992.
I’ve had to overcome difficulties in my
life but one thing has remained a constant and that
is my love of creating artwork.
I’ve done etchings, acrylic and oil
paintings, pen and ink drawing, watercolors and
thrown some pottery to boot.
Right now I am concentrating upon what I want
to do this summer. Sincerely, John J. Trippel
